Successful Earth Day-Birthday Held April 23, 2005 in Martinez

After a three-year hiatus, Earth Day returned to Contra Costa County with an added attraction: the celebration of the 167th birthday anniversary of John Muir.

More than 35 groups dedicated to conservation participated in the festivities under the theme “Celebrate the man who celebrated the earth.”

“Were it not for John Muir’s passion for the natural wonders of his adopted country, it is likely many of them would not be here for us to enjoy,” said Mary O’Hara- Zimmerman, chair of the celebration. “Generations owe a debt of gratitude to John Muir and others like him whenever they visit Yosemite, hike through the Sierra Nevada, or visit a national park. He’s inspired every-day kind of people to take on monumental efforts for the sake of preservation, conservation and education.”

730 visitors came through the gates for our first Birthday/Earth Day celebration under a cold grey sky. We may have had a few showers, but most of the visitors that we saw were smiling and very interested in what the exhibitors had to say and offer. The visitors that weren’t smiling were busy eating some of those wonderful strawberries!

For some of you, it was your first time at the Historical Site, for others, well, you know your way around so well that you even know all of the plants! Please don’t wait a year to visit us again; bring your family and friends.
